In the areas where we realize the LIFENaturaSlowinskaPL project, spring has come to fruition for good. It was snowing a few days ago, and now we can show you all the sun-filled pictures. In order to share the green meadows and the blue sky, we put some photos from Gardno Polder IX - a charming place where we are working to improve the habitat of wetland birds.

The first four pictures were taken in the heart of the polder, where the drainage system is going to be improved, which will allow for regulating the amount of water and its remaining time on the surface of the polder. Such technical measures will allow to maintain a favorable level of water during the spring and autumn migration and during hatching of wetland birds. The modernized drainage system will allow to lower the water level by plot and will allow the mowing meadows and rushes to be conducted smoothly, so as to prevent overgrowth of that place by bushes and trees. In the area of Gardno Polder IX, the nature trail „Gardnienskie Legi” was marked out, where careful observer will be able to see, e.g. lapwings. This is the species for which the polder area is one of the most important nesting sites within the area of Pobrzeze Slowinskie.

Along with the next photos, we move closer to the shores of Lake Gardno, to the area between the lake dike and the flood bank protecting Gardno Polder IX. Partial unsealing of the lake dike will contribute to the reproduction of the habitats of wetland birds in this area. The technical treatment will restore periodic, natural floodings with lake waters. At the same time, the actions undertaken here include annual reeds, sedge rushes and meadows mowing. Reeds removal along with the preservation of low and high forms of vegetation allows to recreate habitats used by wetland birds. Such mowing has already been carried out twice, and the effects of protective measures can be seen in the photos shown. During the field inspection at the site of this conservation operation we were able to observe cranes. In one of the photos we also present an interesting species of protected fern occuring in this area, known as adders-tongue (nasiezrzał pospolity). However, this name can be misleading because this fern is not very common in our country.

We invite you to take a look at the photos and walks in the Gardno Polder IX.
